Not very long ago, so the tale says, a woman who had died in childbed was buried at Ingersheim without shoes having been placed in her grave, as was customarily done. On the very first night she returned in her white burial shift, knocked softly at the window, and said: “Why did you not put shoes on me? I must walk through thistles and thorns and over sharp stones.” So her husband set a pair of shoes outside the door for her, and for six weeks the spirit came back every night to nurse the infant.
