Only children born on a Sunday, or on Ember days, are able to see the Yellow Maiden at the Hohkönigsburg.

She has a snow-white face and wears a close-fitting dress of old-fashioned cut and straw-yellow colour; her hat, veil, shoes, and stockings are orange-yellow. A ring of keys hangs from her belt. If one of those gifted with this privilege comes to the castle at midday, whether alone or in company, only that person will see the maiden. She beckons to him, takes the largest key from the ring, and makes the gesture of unlocking something at one of the great round corner towers.

If one of these favoured people were to follow the Yellow Maiden into the tower and through the underground passages without speaking a single word, she would be released, and he would gain more than enough money. But up to now, everyone has let out a cry of astonishment, and at once the maiden has vanished before their eyes.
